Do you need to remove the c clip to get the shafts out?

I'v got a 1999 Cherokee with a dana 30 front end. I recently knowticed that my penger side u joint is missing a bearing cap so I need to replace it. But half the stuff I'v read says that to get the shaft out you need to pull the diff cover, pull the pinion shaft, and remove the c clip. And half the stuff I read says that you dont. Does anyone know or has done it before?
