There are many ships lost at sea for many reasons. The ship RMS Lusitania was sunk by a German submarine within sight of the UK but it was May, 1915 not the years you mention. Some think the ship was sunk by mistake but Germany later claimed the ship was carrying war material which was not the case. The ship was unlucky in that the torpedo hit near an empty coal hold.
