1984 by George Orwell - confused as hell and desperately seeking help?

Well, i'm not positive on the theme, but the message is fairly obvious. Orwell is trying to tell us that if we're not careful, this can easily be the society we find ourselves living in. We already have security cameras, computer monitors, the CIA tortures to get people to confess sometimes, red light cameras etc. He's trying to make people think, If we let the government do this, what's going to stop them from doing that? He's warning us that even though we don't live in a communist country, we're closer to reaching 1984 than we think, it's not out of the question.
